After the MSPO

Georgia Tech MSPO graduates are strongly encouraged to pursue board certification Screen Shot 2016-05-31 at 12.11.57 PMimmediately following graduation.  To achieve certification in a discipline (Prosthetics or Orthotics), students must complete one-year of residency for that discipline.  This residency must take place at a site accredited by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) and the American Board for Certification, in Orthotics and Prosthetics Inc. (ABC).  The residency sites are available across the nation and the number of sites has been increasing yearly.  The residency must be performed under the supervision of an ABC certified practitioner in the discipline.

During the residency year, graduates will gain additional clinical and technical experience in order to sit for the national practitioner board examination administered by ABC. After successful completion of the national certification examination, the individual will gain the title of Certified Prosthetist (CP), Certified Orthotist (CO), or if both disciplines have been successfully completed, the title Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist (CPO).  Some states require licensure in order to practice.  However, state licenses are usually based on the results of the ABC certification examination.

Since our first class graduated in 2004, 100% of MSPO program graduates have secured residencies and in most cases, they have had the option to choose between more than one. Overall 62% of our graduates have secured residencies in institutional practices (i.e. university, medical center, hospital) and 38% have secured residencies in private practices.
